A Chandler man in his 30s was shot and killed by police at his home on Thursday night after a mental health call escalated into an officer-involved shooting. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. near Alma School and Elliot Roads, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. Officers responded after receiving a report of a suicidal person who had fired a round with a weapon in an alleyway outside his residence.
Upon arrival, officers were told by a family member that he had managed to disarm the individual and invited police into the home, according to 12 News. The situation took a fatal turn when the suspect, found in the garage and after an officer entered to engage him, allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband, triggering the police shooting. While life-saving measures were attempted by the officers on the scene, unfortunately, the man died there.
The Chandler Police Department has not disclosed the identity of the man killed in the shooting. No officers were reported injured during the incident. The Mesa Police Department has taken the lead on the investigation to provide an objective analysis of the events that transpired.
This tragedy highlights the delicate balance officers face when mental health issues intersect with law enforcement. The family sought help for a loved one in crisis, unaware it would lead to his death.
