Chandler's Tumbleweed Park is on the brink of transformation. The city council has recently inked a deal with Weddle Gilmore for professional design services, cashing out a sum not exceeding $498,360 for the upcoming enhancements to The Ranch at Tumbleweed Park. The firm will be responsible for an array of design services encompassing architecture, landscape, and various engineering disciplines, aiming to reinvigorate the historic 19-acre site.
Currently, The Ranch celebrates Chandler's agricultural beginnings with a plethora of historical structures and artifacts, including the McCroskey and Edwards Houses, the seemingly out-of-time Red Shed Theater, relics of an early 20th-century grocery store, and FFA demonstration fields. These elements help transport visitors back to a pivotal era in local history, and as shared by the city's news release, the makeover plan takes a strong cue from Chandler's innovative spirit.
The thorough master plan for The Ranch, which first saw the light of day in 2000 and received a facelift in 2006, was given another update in 2022. This refreshed blueprint plots out a compelling narrative and educational journey through eight designated zones, designed to entice with daily activities, children's adventure play, and spaces tailored for events. These plans snagged a nod of approval from the City Council’s Quality of Life Subcommittee in 2023, which, according to the city's communications, prompted meaningful discussions on projected phases and timelines for the project's execution.
The anticipated first phase, realized in the Fiscal Year 2023-24, laid the essential groundwork with tree planting and an enhanced water irrigation system. Carrying this momentum forward, the second phase slated for FY 2025-26, as per the city's details, aims at the park’s rustic charm, breathing new life into historic homes and barns with various improvements. Not least among these, a service yard will be established, aiming to bolster the day-to-day operation and maintenance. Following this, subsequent phases through FY 2031-32 will see a cascade of structural rebirths, from house renovations to the inception of innovative landmarks, like a new barn pavilion.
The decision of Chandler City Council marks a significant leap towards a reimagined Tumbleweed Park that melds historical roots with modern community engagement. With Weddle Gilmore at the design helm, the roadmap set by the council’s Capital Improvement Program promises to foster a cultural hub brimming with educational, recreational, and celebratory opportunities for the Chandler community for years to come.
