As National Hispanic Heritage Month swings into full gear, Chandler's "Chandler Contigo" program is here to immerse residents in a culturally rich celebration that runs from September 15 to October 15. In partnership with the city’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division, and various other local organizations, a lineup of events reflecting the vibrancy of Hispanic culture is set to take place across multiple venues.
Get ready to dive into a world of music, art, history, and community beginning with the Chandler Contigo ¡Día de Fiesta! Kickoff Event on September 21. The celebration will feature performances by Mariachi Nueva Fusion, poetry from Alberto Ríos – Arizona’s poet laureate, and dare I say, a chance to meet local Lucha Libre wrestlers. According to the official announcement, families and individuals alike can also partake in soccer clinics, enjoy food trucks, and savor the rich tapestry of Latin dance offerings.
Not to be overshadowed, the 25th annual Chandler Mariachi and Folklórico Festival is poised to be a standout event on October 5. This festival is where music legends from groups such as Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán and Mariachi America de Jesús Rodríguez de Hijar converge to deliver a night of enchanting music, accompanied by the graceful movements of Ballet Folklórico Quetzalli-AZ.
Filmbuffs can look forward to "Contigo Movie Night," where the film "Spare Parts" – featuring George Lopez and Marisa Tomei – takes the spotlight on September 22. As reported by the city's announcement, the screenings will be coupled with a Q&A panel graced by the presence of special guests including the film's writer Elissa Matsueda.
Art aficionados will have a chance to explore "Deities of the South," an exhibit by Marco Albarrán challenging the audience’s perspective on ancient sacred deities and their place in the modern world. The exhibit, housed at The Gallery at Chandler Center for the Arts, stars a collection of multi-media art set to provoke thought and discussion among its viewers.
Embracing family, storytime gets a unique twist with events like the bilingual storytelling session and interactive craft activities designed to honor Hispanic heritage and incite family bonding. For further details about the events, or for any necessary registration procedures, folks can direct their browsers to the official Chandler Contigo page or reach out to Adrianna Erickson at Chandler’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division.
