
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are currently investigating a felony hit and run crash in the Steele Creek Division that left a pedestrian with life-threatening injuries. The incident took place on Tuesday night, August 27, around 10:21 p.m., confirmed CMPD's news release. Officers dispatched to 7701 Sharon Lakes Road found the victim, identified as Luis Alfredo Lopez-Garcia, struck in the parking lot.
Upon their arrival, emergency services transported Lopez-Garcia to Atrium Health Main facing critical injuries. During the course of the investigation, Police identified a white 2010 Ford F150 pickup as the suspect vehicle found abandoned on Waterford Lakes Drive, not far from the scene of the crash. The alleged driver, Baudilio Lopez Perez, had absconded the vehicle and fled on foot in direction yet unknown to authorities.
Further inquiry by the Major Crash Investigation Unit along with members of the DWI Task Force and Motor Unit led to the discovery that Perez was driving through the parking lot when he collided with Lopez-Garcia, who was lying on the pavement. "Perez did not stop to render aid, did not contact the police, and fled the scene," as per officers leading the case mentioned in CMPD website. An arrest warrant for Felony Hit and Run was swiftly obtained for Perez the following day.
On August 28, in a brief turn of events, Perez was located and apprehended then transported to the LEC where an interview was conducted. After the conclusion of the interview, he was handed over into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
