Businesses in the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 22nd Districts of Chicago are on high alert after a string of commercial burglaries that have seen front doors wrenched off by chains attached to stolen vehicles. According to a public notice released by the Chicago Police Department, these break-ins were followed by theft of cash registers, ATM machines, tobacco products, and other sale items.
The burglaries have been taking place in the early morning hours, with the first reported incident occurring on the 10600 block of South Torrence Avenue on August 2. Since then, there have been multiple break-ins spanning several neighborhoods. The latest occurred on the 400 block of East 75th Street on August 25, 2024. The perpetrators are described as 4-8 individuals clad in dark clothing, including hoodies and masks, systematically targeting businesses to quickly grab what they can before fleeing the scenes, as detailed by the Chicago Police Department.
Store owners have been advised to keep their property well-lit and ensure all points of entry are secured. The notice from the Chicago Police Department also encourages proprietors to immediately repair any structural vulnerabilities such as broken windows, doors, or locks. If available, video surveillance should be maintained and footage of any incidents saved for investigators. "Report suspicious activity immediately," the notice emphasizes, signaling the urgency for community vigilance.
In addition to security measures, business owners are instructed to refrain from tampering with crime scenes should they fall victim to these burglaries. The importance of preserving evidence such as fingerprints or footprints could prove to be vital in the apprehension of these offenders. "If you are a victim do not touch anything, call police immediately," as stated by the Chicago Police Department, underscoring the need to avoid potentially compromising any leads that could be gleaned from the location.
