A Chicago man has been slapped with felony charges for allegedly burglarizing the Cook County State's Attorney's office and swiping laptops, authorities said. Jordan Jose Ocampo, 44, is accused of felony theft and burglary for the July incident that left the Criminal Court Administration Building on South California Avenue missing critical equipment, according to WGN-TV.
Following the theft, which occurred on July 22, deputies reviewed security camera footage that reportedly captured Ocampo exiting the building with the stolen goods, among them, three laptops of unknown content relevance, as detailed by WGN-TV. While this type of security breach at a prosecutorial office could spell disaster, spokespeople stopped short of confirming whether sensitive data was compromised. Ocampo had already been incarcerated at the Cook County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery, kidnapping, and attempted criminal sexual assault, which were unrelated, before his alleged confession to theft from the State's Attorney's office.
It was revealed by the Chicago Sun-Times that the alleged thief's ingress into the courthouse offices might have involved a makeshift way of maintaining access, whereby he supposedly used stacked chairs to depress the buzzer while bypassing security checkpoints designed to bolster the protection of such sensitive environments.
Detectives met with Ocampo after his prior arrest on August 14 and he reportedly admitted to the theft, a troubling admission that raised questions about courtroom security. Besides the laptops, items including a lunch box, and a secretary's sweatshirt adorned with the office emblem were reported missing. Ocampo's court appearance took place last Sunday.
