Residents of Chicago and its surrounding areas are bracing for a spell of inclement weather with the National Weather Service forecasting a range of hazardous conditions. Today's weather in Chicago is expected to include showers and thunderstorms, mainly before noon, with a 60% chance of precipitation. Highs will hover around 84 degrees, with new rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, though thunderstorms might lead to higher totals.
As the day progresses, the situation seems to intensify according to the National Weather Service's Chicago division. There's also a mention of a potential for "strong to severe" storms, with locally damaging winds and hail up to the size of quarters. This evening, there is a likelihood of showers and thunderstorms between 7 pm and 10 pm, with over 70% chance of precipitation and the possibility of substantial rainfall.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service at 344 AM CDT underscores the elevated risk, noting an "Elevated Thunderstorm Risk" with associated damaging wind speeds that could reach up to 65 mph, and a chance for large hail. Additionally, there's a noted risk of tornadoes at a level 1 of 5 and potential flooding, particularly this evening and overnight near the lake. Spotters may be called upon late this afternoon and into the evening to monitor these conditions.
Looking ahead, Friday is not projected to offer much respite from the dismal weather. The National Weather Service anticipates "Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 1pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 1pm and 4pm," with a 70% chance of precipitation and continued risks of local flooding. The weather should improve towards the weekend, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-80s forecasted for Saturday and Sunday, though a limited thunderstorm risk remains early next week.
