Los Angeles police responded to a report of a possible kidnapping on Sunday in Winnetka when a car with a six-month-old child inside was allegedly stolen. As per CBS News, the incident occurred around 2:50 p.m. at the intersection of Chase Street and Oakdale Avenue. The vehicle, a Volkswagen Passat featuring some trunk damage, was located less than a mile away from the abduction site, at Community Street and Oso Avenue with the child still inside.
The LAPD has yet to announce any arrests in connection with the incident, although, someone was detained earlier but later confirmed not to be the suspect. As noted by FOX LA, the 6-month-old was eventually found safe, but the details regarding the child's condition and whether injuries were sustained have not been disclosed.
This harrowing occurrence is the latest in a series of similar incidents in Los Angeles County, with this being the third in a week. Just two days prior, another car was stolen from a Ralph's grocery store parking lot in Sun Valley with a child in the backseat. Five days before that, in Sylmar, a 10-year-old was inside a pickup truck when it was taken. In both instances, the children were reunited with their parents unharmed after the vehicles were found abandoned, reports CBS News.
Authorities transported the child to a nearby hospital, though it remains unclear if this was a precaution or due to injuries incurred during the incident. The Los Angeles Police Department has not released any more information surrounding the circumstances of the recent rescue.
