A tragic incident occurred in the Freedom Division when a civilian was killed and two police officers were injured following a motor vehicle crash. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported that the officers were responding to a stolen vehicle located on the shoulder of I-485 at Mt. Holly Rd. when an unrelated vehicle collided with two police cars and the civilian reporting the theft shortly after 10:15 a.m. on Thursday.
The civilian was pronounced dead at the scene while an officer who was pinned inside his vehicle, along with another officer and an additional civilian, were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. This incident has sparked an extensive investigation led by the CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, alongside the DWI Task Force and Motor Unit, to determine the dynamics and cause of the fatal crash.
Crime Scene Search units were also dispatched to meticulously process the scene and gather physical evidence that may shed light on the circumstances of the accident. The CMPD has emphasized that the investigation is active and ongoing, with additional information to be released as it becomes available.
