As students gear up for the new school year, the City of Clarksville is putting the final touches on its safety project on Cunningham Lane, near New Providence Middle School, in an effort to protect its young citizens. According to the City of Clarksville's announcement, the street department has introduced a range of new safety measures, spanning 420 feet between Glenkirk Drive and the Exxon Convenience Store.
The improvements include approximately 200 feet of new curb and gutter, along with a new 5-foot sidewalk running east to west along the north side of Cunningham Lane. These enhancements, identified by the Street Department, serve as the missing link for connecting Cunningham Plaza, Northridge Subdivision, New Providence Middle School, and the Kleeman Community Center. To aid pedestrians, new crosswalks with in-roadway warning lights have been installed on Glenkirk Drive and across Cunningham Lane. These lights are activated by a push-button and send a beacon to drivers, signaling the need to stop for safe street crossing.
Embracing modern technology, the crosswalk on Cunningham Lane sports LED flashing warning signs and in-roadway warning lights, all push-button actuated, which illuminate to alert drivers and ensure students can cross safely. "Once activated, this section of roadway will light up, triggering motorists to come to a complete stop, and allowing pedestrians to safely cross the street," as stated on the city's official website.
This project is part of a more comprehensive strategy designed to enhance city transportation under the Mayor's Transportation 2020+ master plan which promises to bring infrastructure improvements across all geographical regions of Clarksville.
