The tragic aftermath of a crash on Interstate 65 has culminated in the death of a man days after the initial collision. The Metro Nashville Police Department relayed to WSMV that the victim, 53-year-old Garrett Stolle of College Grove, succumbed to his injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on Tuesday. Stolle originally sustained critical injuries during the July 25 incident on I-65 North.
Charged in connection with the crash is 33-year-old Matthew Pappas, from Chapel Hill, who was reportedly operating his Dodge Ram pickup truck erratically and at a high rate of speed before the incident; a series of collisions consequently unfolded the truck sideswiped a Subaru Crosstrack and then struck Stolle's Audi Q5 from behind, which in turn hit a Ford F-150, police told FOX17.
Following the crash, Pappas, the alleged driver of the Dodge Ram truck, presented signs of impairment, including "an odor of alcohol on his breath, slurred speech, and bloodshot glassy eyes", and he also "admitted to drinking a beer prior to the crash," according to reports by MNPD cited by WSMV. After the crash and after being discharged from the hospital, Pappas faced charges of vehicular assault, reckless driving, implied consent, and driving on a suspended license but is currently out on a $16,000 bond.
