A significant collision involving two semi-trucks occurred Thursday morning on I-80 and I-94 in Northwest Indiana, causing a disruption in the flow of traffic that lasted for several hours. According to the Chicago Tribune, two semis—one a white Kenworth tanker and the other a gray 2014 Freightliner—collided in the westbound lanes, near the Indianapolis Boulevard exit at around 9:10 a.m., sending the Kenworth tanker rolling over the median and leaving its trailer resting on the eastbound lanes.
The Indiana State Police reported that the tanker, which was loaded with coal tar, was sideswiped by the Freightliner, leading to the Kenworth striking the concrete median and flipping over. Sent rolling into the eastbound lanes, some of the coal tar spilled as a result of the crash. Despite the dramatic events, the drivers of both vehicles, Dustin Beemer, 30, of Channahon, Illinois, and Abdi Warsame, 54, of Columbus, Ohio, escaped injury. This incident led to the closure of the two inside lanes on both the westbound and eastbound sides for several hours while cleanup crews worked to manage the coal tar spillage and remove the wrecked vehicles from the site.
FOX 32 Chicago added that as of approximately 3:30 p.m., remediation crews were still on the scene, contending with the aftermath of the accident and working to offload the tanker. The traffic congestion resulting from the collision and subsequent lane closures created significant delays for drivers navigating the accident area, with ripple effects that impacted traffic patterns well into the afternoon.
Travelers were advised to expect ongoing delays as the cleanup reached its conclusion, with the backed-up traffic painting a stark portrait of the disruption caused by the crash. Updates regarding the traffic conditions and cleanup efforts are anticipated.
