In a move to tackle the increasing difficulty residents in suburban Cook County face in managing their water bills, Cook County has teamed up with Elevate to establish the Water Affordability Program. The $11.5 million venture, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), aims to provide financial relief and other supportive services for those falling behind on their water payments, according to the Cook County Government.

The dilemma of water costs escalating at a rate unheard of among other household expenses since 2015 is a reality for many, with Cook County stepping in with a resolution. President Toni Preckwinkle of the Cook County Board stated, "Too many of our residents are facing the heartbreaking choice between paying for water or other essential needs." She elaborated on the importance of the program in making sure families have access to clean, affordable water, stating, "The Cook County Water Affordability Program is a direct response to this growing crisis, providing crucial relief and long-term solutions," as detailed by the Cook County Government.

Another aspect of the program addresses leaky and inefficient plumbing, which often contributes to high water costs. To lower bills for residents, leak repairs and replacement of outdated fixtures are on the agenda. In a statement obtained by Cook County's official release, eligible residents interested in leak repair can apply, with applications to open later this year. Plumbing contractors looking to bid on these repair jobs need to respond by September 30, details of which can be found on Elevate's website.

After analysis, municipalities could receive up to $300,000 to implement these strategies. Interested parties can find more information and apply at CookCountyTAP.org/Applications, with applications due by October 18, as noted by the Cook County Government.
