Cordova Man Arrested After Suspected DUI Chase Ends in Crash Near Germantown ParkwaySource: Shelby County Sheriff's Office

A 21-year-old Cordova man was arrested after an alleged DUI chase that led to a crash involving a minivan on Sunday, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. The suspect, identified as Gillberto Amparan, is now facing several charges, which include driving under the influence, evading arrest, and operating a vehicle with a suspended, revoked, or canceled license.

The pursuit began around 6:45 p.m. when deputies on patrol observed a silver Lexus Sedan, driven by Amparan, striking the center median near Germantown Parkway and Ikea Way. Attempts to initiate a traffic stop were unsuccessful as Amparan is accused to have made a U-turn, subsequently entering southbound traffic and instigating a chase. FOX13 Memphis reported the incident with details on the ensuing collision with a Chrysler Pacifica minivan north of Chimney Rock on Germantown Parkway.

No injuries were reported from the incident. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the chase came to an end south of Dexter Road, where Amparan's vehicle stopped due to significant damage. "He was then taken into custody for driving under the influence," as per WREG.

During the arrest, deputies noted that Amparan appeared to have an unsteady gait and slurred speech. He also failed to properly complete the standardized field sobriety test. Officers found two empty Jack Daniels whiskey bottles and an empty Michelob Ultra beer can inside the Lexus, as noted in a report by Action News 5. A search warrant was later obtained to conduct a blood draw on Amparan to further substantiate the DUI charges.

Court records indicate that this isn't Amparan's first encounter with traffic violations. He was previously found guilty of driving without a license or insurance in July 2023. His case is now due in court earlier today, according to WREG.
