In a bid to bridge the glaring digital divide within its borders, Dallas County has unveiled a $30 million initiative aimed at bringing high-speed internet access to its residents countywide, with a particular focus on underserved areas. According to a report by NBC DFW, the project dubbed the "Middle Mile and Digital Equity Project," is poised to extend internet connectivity to approximately 24,000 households currently without access.
An infusion of funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, to the tune of $28 million, has been earmarked to make this possible. Broadband is often viewed as an indispensable utility, especially in the wake of the pandemic's pivotal role in highlighting inequities. "Unfortunately, in 2024, we’re still talking about a tale of two cities," Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price said, as per NBC DFW, pointing to the pronounced infrastructural disparities the project aims to address.
Zayo, a communications infrastructure provider, will be collaborating with Dallas County to construct the "middle mile" fiber network. As per FOX 4 News, this network backbone will lay the groundwork for local ISPs to provide competitive high-speed services to residents across 10 ZIP codes. This initiative marks a comprehensive effort to level the playing field by propelling digital equity forward within the region.
Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins echoed the critical nature of this expansion during discussions about the project. "Broadband access to the internet can no longer be seen as a luxury in 2024. Access to the internet is a basic need like electricity, heat, and water," Jenkins said, as reported by FOX 4 News. This project, fueled by both urgency and necessity, is poised to transform Dallas County's digital landscape, potentially setting a precedent for similar undertakings in other regions grappling with digital inequity.
