In recognition of Labor Day, DeKalb County is switching up its residential sanitation collection schedule to accommodate the holiday. As Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 2, all garbage, recycling, and yard trimming services are on hold to resume the next day. Instead of navigating the waste-strewn aftermath of a paused service, residents can expect a one-day delay for each of the week's regular pick-ups, a move to ensure everyone still receives their due sanitation service without undue delay or hassle, according to the announcement by Dekalb County.
Providing some flexibility in this altered schedule, the North Transfer Station will keep its gates open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Labor Day itself – though it's a sole beacon as the Customer Care call center, the administrative building, the Central Transfer Station, and the Seminole Road Landfill all take a day off, they're closing for the holiday and promising to bounce back to the regular rhythm starting Tuesday, Sept. 3. DeKalb's disruption, this dance of deferred garbage days, speaks not to our service workers' absence but to their humanity, their own rightful stake in the respite we term Labor Day – they too merit the pause, the breath, the backyard barbecues or whatever quietude Labor Day might mean for them.
Residents should brace for a tick later than usual as the service days shift – if your bins usually see the light of a Monday pick-up, prepare for a Tuesday visit, and so on until the week concludes and regular service resumes post-holiday. All collections from Tuesday to Friday will follow this one-day-after pattern, and while it might take a minute to adjust, it ensures no bin is left behind.
For questions or concerns, residents can contact the Sanitation Division’s Customer Care team at 404-294-2900. They will return calls starting Tuesday after the holiday. For urgent queries, email [email protected].
