The project, which covered 17 units at DHA's Dispersed West Public Housing, axed gas furnaces and heaters in favor of energy-efficient, electric heating and cooling systems, according to the City of Denver.
The $661K leap into a greener living space was funded chiefly by Xcel Energy and the City and County of Denver's Office of Climate Action, Sustainability, and Resiliency (CASR) pooling efforts for this key project, additional support trickled in from Denver's Office of Nonprofit Engagement (D-ONE), laying the groundwork for a communal effort wrapped in electro tech innovation. Liz Babcock, the Executive Director of CASR, highlighted the synergy between sustainability and affordability in Denver, noting the dire need for cooling as the city grapples with intensifying heat due to climate change, she said, "Projects like this are part of the city's investment in climate solutions that benefit people's lives today and into the future," as per the City of Denver.
Energy Outreach Colorado (EOC) has shepherded residents through this transition, providing educational resources in multiple languages, ensuring the newly instated all-electric heat pump technology serves more than as tools, but as extensions of their domestic lives. Jennifer Gremmert, the organization's CEO, indicated in a statement that they're looking beyond mere energy efficiency to enact real change in the routine of residents, to extend this pilot's success across the state, as noted by the City of Denver.
Meanwhile, Robert Kenney, President of Xcel Energy-CO, regards this foray into full electrification as a precursor to more expansive developments, hoping to shepherd customers towards emission reductions and meet Xcel's target of a 25% drop in greenhouse gases come 2030 from 2020 levels, the company, through this generosity and foresight, weaves corporate responsibility into the fabric of Denver's evolving topography.
