As Denver Public Schools ushered in a new academic year this Monday, the Denver Police Department was actively reminding local commuters to be extra cautious on the roads. With an expected uptick in foot and bicycle traffic around educational institutions, safety for the younger residents traveling to their classes is a dominating concern. As stated by the Denver Police Department, authorities stressed the importance of observing speed limits, doing one's due diligence when buses are loading or unloading, and paying heed to crossing guards.
It's not just the drivers that need to be mindful, the students and their families are also being called upon to contribute to the collective safety efforts. The guidance speaks directly to the parenting instinct to protect while outlining basic roadway etiquette for students whether they're on foot, on a bicycle, or behind the wheel. Simple mandates as to not standing on the road, walking in groups, and adhering to bicycle safety can potentially stave off unforeseen tragedy.
For drivers, the police department highlights the need for acute awareness in school zones. There are explicit instructions to "slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits – especially in school zones," and "stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children." They've also prohibited actions such as passing in crosswalks, changing lanes or making U-turns in school zones, and engaging in distracted driving practices like texting, as per the Denver Police Department.
Students and their guardians have been served a notice of their responsibilities, and children have been advised to always make use of crosswalks and follow the instructions given by school crossing guards. Bicyclists are reminded to "wear a helmet and follow all safety rules for bicyclists," and teenage drivers are cautioned against speeding and distractions; a reminder that "every passenger must use a safety belt, or if required, a child safety seat" reinforces the importance of safety within the vehicle, as noted by the Denver Police Department.
