Detroit Man Charged with Murder of Renowned Neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover After Extensive International InvestigationSource: Wayne County Prosecutor's Office

A 34-year-old man, Desmond Burks of Detroit, has been formally charged in connection with the murder of Dr. Devon Hoover. The well-known neurosurgeon was found deceased in the attic of his historical Detroit mansion over a year ago, leading to an extensive multi-state and international investigation, according to a FOX 2 Detroit report.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced today the culmination of what has been described as a "massive undertaking," involving eight felony charges against Burks. These charges include first degree murder, felony murder, and larceny, among others. Worthy indicated the case reached across five states and three countries, also noting the hesitancy of witnesses to come forward due to the intimate relationship between Hoover and Burks, which on occasion involved financial transactions for sexual acts. Despite challenges, their efforts were relentless to gather sufficient evidence to proceed with charges, as detailed in a news conference covered by WWJ Newsradio 950.

Burks is now facing serious accusations, including the misuse of Hoover's credit cards for fraudulent purchases following the murder. Hoover, who was 53 at the time of his death, was found by authorities after they were alerted by his family that he missed a trip to visit his dying mother. In a prior ClickOnDetroit article, Hoover's community expressed deep concern, with an acquaintance, Brian Douglas, stating, "The person who committed this crime is still walking around. This community is still vulnerable," illustrating the impact Hoover's untimely demise had on the Boston-Edison and the wider community.

The full weight of the investigation included nearly 90 witness interviews, over 300 pieces of evidence, and more than 134 search warrants to finally be able to forge ahead with the public announcement of charges. "This investigation was conducted for over a year. Volumes of documents and evidence were recovered, analyzed, scrutinized, and then summarized," Kym Worthy said in a statement obtained by WWJ Newsradio 950. Burks, concurrently accused of an unrelated road rage shooting in April 2024, remains in the Wayne County Jail on a $1 million bond.
