As the Democratic National Convention draws near, Doug Emhoff, Second Gentleman and husband to Vice President Kamala Harris, visited Chicago this week for a series of Democratic fundraisers, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. At these events, Emhoff highlighted the administration’s commitment to Israel’s security and tackled the issue of antisemitism.
Making an appearance in the Windy City, Emhoff's journey commenced with a gathering in the West Loop at the residence of former AIPAC President Lee “Rosy” Rosenberg and his spouse, there, Emhoff praised the Vice President's decisive actions in light of recent international conflicts, asserting "Just today, she was in the situation room dealing with the security of Israel," indicating the personal significance of the matter to the Vice President and her steadfast approach to these concerns, as stated by the Chicago Tribune. Emhoff, who is Jewish, expressed his dedication to combating antisemitism, a resolve that was echoed by Senator Ben Cardin who also attended the fundraiser and lauded Harris for her support of Israel’s security.
In an equally compelling event covered by the Chicago Sun-Times, Emhoff criticized the hate and antisemitism that have been brewing, an issue magnified by their precedents post-Trump administration, Emhoff expressed this sentiment decidedly: “When they got to office, post-Trump, there’s so many things that Biden and Harris inherited. ... One of those things was hate,” and later, contemplating another Trump presidency, he didn't mince words, "He cannot be anywhere near the White House," stating Harris’ ability to discern "a fake tough guy from a mile away."
As Emhoff concludes his fundraising efforts in Chicago and prepares for the forthcoming Democratic National Convention, his statements have set the tone for what might be expected from the Vice President's presidential campaign and the administration's future dealings, with a focus on America’s global responsibilities and the unwavering support for Israel that has characterized the Biden-Harris tenure. As per the Chicago Tribune, Emhoff is expected to make a final stop on Chicago’s North Shore, a testament to the extensive groundwork being laid for the high-profile political event that looms on the horizon.
