Two individuals have been handed down a ten-year prison sentence after being apprehended with over a million fentanyl pills in their possession. The Mexican nationals, 29-year-old Florencio Camacho Allan and 30-year-old Gerardo Gaxiola Patiño were sentenced following their April guilty pleadings to federal charges. According to KTLA, these individuals were involved in a conspiracy to distribute the potentially deadly drug.

In April, Allan and Patiño admitted to conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, while a third co-defendant Alex Valdez Oroz is yet to be sentenced. The Department of Justice elaborated that the trio was tangled in a plan to push fentanyl on behalf of an unnamed Mexican drug broker. The deal set in motion on March 7, 2023, involved an agreement to sell an initial "sample" of approximately 10,000 fentanyl pills, followed by the supply of another two million pills, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California.

Assistant United States Attorney K. Afia Bondero of the Major Frauds Section prosecuted the case, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California. The process was the result of efforts by many hands, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Hawthorne Police Department, the Fullerton Police Department, the El Monte Police Department, and the California National Guard. This collaboration was part of the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) initiative, which aims to clamp down on the transport and distribution of illicit substances. The ongoing battle against fentanyl, a drug responsible for a steep uptick in overdoses, continues to be a top priority for law enforcement agencies at all levels.
