Early in the morning, a fire broke out in a vacant building in Seattle's First Hill/Capitol Hill neighborhood, sending plumes of smoke into the sky and ushering in a quick response from the Seattle Fire Department. According to the Seattle Fire Department, crews were dispatched after 911 calls received at 4:22 a.m. reported the blaze at the three-story apartment on Belmont Ave. Firefighters arriving at the scene found flames escalating an exterior stairwell, soon spreading into the structure and leaping to an adjacent occupied building.
Fighting the fire that climbed into the building’s hidden spaces, the firefighters operated quickly to control the spread. While the efforts were going on to douse the vacant building, it was confirmed by additional crews searching inside that no occupants were found. Despite the flames challenging the structural integrity of the building, with concerns of a roof collapse lingering, the crews promptly switched to a defensive strategy, directing water streams from a safer distance.
The Seattle Fire Department's strategy involved both aerial ladders and positioning on nearby rooftops to combat the fire from various vantage points. This tactical approach aimed to bring the fire under control while ensuring firefighter safety, given the potential risks posed by the compromised structure. Thankfully, the incident resulted in only one minor injury, treated at the scene, as per the Seattle Fire Department. The affected individual did not require hospitalization.
Residents were urged to keep windows and doors closed as heavy smoke covered the area, infiltrating blocks around the fire scene. Fire crews continued their work through the morning to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and posed no further hazard. With the reason behind the fire still unclear, an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause. Updates will follow as more information becomes available from the ongoing investigation.
