To ensure East Austin students are well-prepared for the new school year, local nonprofits Impactful Inspirations Inc. and Little Treasures hosted their 4th annual back-to-school drive, distributing free school supplies and clothing. According to a Fox 7 Austin report, the event saw a turnout with parents and children lining up for hours to receive the free items.
Over 200 backpacks filled with school essentials were made available to families in need, a much-needed aid for individuals like Regina Parker, a parent of three who expressed to Fox 7 Austin that the help was "really helpful." Despite the heat and the need to line up early, the community's desire to simply receive the support was evident as families began queuing around noon even though the event started at 3 p.m.
The back-to-school giveaway in East Austin did not only provide stationary and clothing; kids were also able to pick up a pair of shoes, enjoy a free haircut, and participate in games, as described by the KVUE Video report. The You Are Our Future Foundation's sixth annual event at Rosewood Park illustrates the community's commitment to supporting its youth.
But the aid didn't stop at school supplies. Stephanie Walker, the event organizer and director of Impactful Inspirations, told Fox 7 Austin that barbers and vouchers for free haircuts and braids were also on offer. To not only include utility but also items of personal care speaks to a deeper understanding of student's needs as they prepare to face a new academic year with confidence.
Grandparents, like Stanley Hamilton, also found solace and support in these events, stating to Fox 7 Austin, "We brought our grandson here to get a backpack, and hopefully he can get some shoes. It's great. I didn’t have the money to give it to him, so it is great."
