It seems that El Güero Canelo, the famed Tucson eatery known for dishing out delicious Sonoran hot dogs, has also been serving up a healthy dose of community spirit. In partnership with Pima County’s efforts to improve pet care among Spanish-speaking residents, the restaurant chain has utilized its local reputation to foster educational outreach on pet safety and wellness. As noted by Pima County's official news release, this collaboration was recognized with the proclamation of “El Güero Canelo Day” by the Pima County Board of Supervisors on August 13.
Having seen the need to build trust in historically underserved communities, Pima County found in El Güero Canelo a partner with an already established following. In a move that further cemented this trust, beginning in late 2023, the restaurant chain distributed educational materials and free microchip coupons to its diners, working hard to keep pets with their families.
El Güero Canelo didn’t stop with handing out flyers and coupons. In June, they hosted a spay/neuter and wellness event offering services at no cost, and even provided free Sonoran hot dogs at several community events organized by the Pima Animal Care Center (PACC). Furthermore, in April, the Oracle location of El Güero Canelo became a hub for free pet supplies distribution to staff and their families, ensuring that the pets of those who serve the community were also cared for.
"This collaboration is proof of the good we can do for our community when we partner with the private sector," Jose Merino, Pima County Communications’ deputy director, told the city's newsroom, still feeling the reverberations of the partnership. The acknowledgment was not just a formality; it was a genuine nod to the effectiveness of such community-focused efforts.
The Spanish-language campaign, underpinned by PACC and supported by its nonprofit partner, Friends of Pima Animal Care Center, represents a key initiative in making pet resources accessible to all county residents. By recognizing El Güero Canelo and Daniel Contreras, Pima County delivers more than just an honor; it delivers a message about the power of local businesses in driving positive social change.
