El Paso County officials have confirmed the arrest of a 63-year-old man in connection with an illegal dumping incident in the county's vast desert lands. In this stark reminder of the environmental challenges faced by local communities, authorities responded to a tip on August 17th, leading deputies from the Peter John Herrera Patrol Station to an illegal dumpsite near the intersection of Michael Dr. and Horizon Blvd.
According to El Paso County Sheriff's Office, Richard Eugene Mitchell was found to have discarded approximately 25 automobile tires in a desert location southeast of the 11700 block of Michael Dr. The investigation revealed that the tires varied in model, brand, and size and that Mitchell's actions not only polluted the environment but also resulted in damage to a third party's property when confronted about his activities.
Mitchell has since been booked on charges of Illegal Dumping, 5LBS, 500LBS or 5GAL, 100CFT, at an established bond of $1,000, and Criminal Mischief, $2,500 to $30K with a bond set at $4,000. The Sheriff's Office's swift action underscores their commitment to preserving the natural landscape and holding violators responsible for their reckless behavior towards public lands.
