Motorists in Macomb County should brace for delays and detours as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced the closure of northbound M-53, also known as the Van Dyke Freeway, starting August 5, for approximately three months. According to ClickOnDetroit, the segment between 18 Mile Road and M-59 will undergo bridge and road work, necessitating the closure.
Commuters who typically travel this route will be redirected via a detour, recommended by MDOT, starting from westbound 18 Mile Road to northbound Mound Road, and then proceeding to eastbound Dorby Drive/M-59 to rejoin northbound M-53. Additionally, MDOT's press release indicates that bridge work will also take place at Utica Road, 19 Mile Road, and Canal Road, where local road flagging will manage traffic.
The closure of M-53 is part of a more extensive $16 million construction project aimed at improving the lifespan and safety of the highway and surrounding infrastructures. This includes the resurfacing of the roadway, concrete and guardrail repairs, maintenance of 10 bridges, and the resurfacing of the 23 Mile Road ramps to M-53. Economic models forecast that the project is expected to directly and indirectly support 227 jobs.
In the meantime, Clinton River Road will remain closed over M-53 until late August, due to ongoing bridge work. Drivers should plan for extra travel time and stay alert for signs indicating changes in traffic patterns, as the construction project unfolds. MDOT emphasizes that this investment into Michigan's infrastructure will enhance safety and connectivity for the community, but begs for public patience and understanding during the period of construction.
