Expect major delays if you're traveling on the Interstate 90 Vantage Bridge. Starting September 5, 2024, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will begin the next phase of a bridge deck replacement project. The bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction, 24/7, until November. WSDOT stated that this work will make the bridge smoother and last longer, addressing issues like potholes that have caused emergency lane closures in the past.
Starting Thursday, the lanes on both sides of the bridge will be reduced from two to one, affecting all vehicles, including oversized loads. The Washington State Patrol will be stationed at both ends to enforce speed and width restrictions. Expect long delays, especially for eastbound traffic on Fridays and westbound traffic on Sundays.
For those already dreading the gridlock, there is a glint of respite, as WSDOT is urging drivers to seek alternative routes where possible. But keep the winter coats handy because this construction project will take a breather during the colder months, allowing traffic to return to normalcy, as the usual two lanes will reopen in each direction from November through to March, with work set to continue next spring.
The Vantage Bridge, a crucial artery for the state's primary east-west highway and a proud piece of history since 1962, will have to endure these growing pains as it receives its due restoration. Previously revamped in 1982, this extensive project, scheduled to reach completion by spring 2028, promises to resurrect the bridge's former glory. Meanwhile, travelers are advised to plan ahead and arm themselves with patience as the journey across the Columbia River enters a new chapter of progress, albeit with the promise of tomorrow's smoother rides and safer traverses.
