A police chase of a stolen vehicle in Kent resulted in a fiery collision, leaving five people injured, according to reports from KING 5 News. The incident began when a Kent Police officer spotted a stolen car exiting a parking lot on Central Avenue and James Street early Thursday morning.
The driver of the stolen vehicle refused to stop, leading to a pursuit. Driving at a high speed, the stolen car ran a red light at the intersection of 277th Street and the southbound Highway 167 offramp and was involved in a head-on collision with a Mini Cooper, which then caught on fire, as caught on nearby WSDOT cameras, KOMO News reports.
Rescue operations ensued with firefighters extinguishing the resulting blaze. The injured parties included the four teenagers in the stolen vehicle, ranging from 12 to 18 years of age, and the 42-year-old Mini Cooper driver. According to the Dubin Law Office News Blog, all five were treated at a local hospital following the crash.
Authorities later arrested the 18-year-old driver of the stolen Nissan. While this marks another incident in a string of adolescent involvement in vehicle-related crimes, the surrounding community wrestles with the implications of such young individuals entangled in high-stakes encounters with the law.
