Fort Worth is about to get a cleaner look with its latest addition of a dozen spanking-new street sweepers. Set to start service on September 6, these sweepers are arriving to tackle the grit and grime of the city's major thoroughfares. They represent a drive towards a safer, and more environmentally conscious Fort Worth by enhancing sweeping routes, and increasing cleaning cycles, and, they're expected to develop a regular rotation to touch other city streets currently off their beaten path.
In a bid to ready the operators for the streets, training with TYMCO, the street sweeper manufacturer, kicks off next week, culminating in the first week of September. According to the City of Fort Worth, Environmental Services equipment operators will take the reins of their shiny new machines posthaste the training, furthered by Environmental Service Director Cody Whittenburg's enthusiasm: "Our team is so excited to receive our new street sweepers," he said. "It is another step towards our unified goal to create and maintain a clean, safe and attractive City."
In the meantime, September also promises to be significant for community engagement with plans for public interaction with the new fleet. On September 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the city will hold a photo event at the old City Hall, where residents can get up close and personal with some of the sweepers before they officially hit the streets.
Coming this fall, the "Name the Sweepers Contest" is inviting residents to get witty with words by suggesting names for each of the 12 new sweepers. Ideas can be submitted on the official City of Fort Worth litter webpage by September 30. As explained by the City of Fort Worth, "Names will be selected by November and will be displayed on the side of new sweepers in the future."
This initiative arrives on the back of a collaboration with Sweeping Corp. of America (SCA), which currently tends to key routes in the city. As these new sweepers start making rounds, SCA will remain on contract to handle special projects or offer additional support when needed.
