The city's latest five-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP), spotlighting proposed capital spending from 2025 to 2029, was rolled out along with the FY25 budget proposal on August 13. Peering under the hood of this financial vehicle, we see an allocation of just shy of $3.8 billion for various city projects, as stated by the City of Fort Worth.
A significant chunk of the budget, specifically $2 billion, is earmarked for the Water Utility's needs, while $814 million is set aside for capital expenditures in the coming year FY25. However, the implications of these numbers stretch beyond their face values; they represent a roadmap of intentions and priorities for Fort Worth’s development in the near term. The CIP charts a course that encompasses facility construction, infrastructure expansion, and ongoing asset maintenance critical for the city's growth.
Aligning with the City's Comprehensive Plan and its overarching goals, the CIP lays out the fiscal allocation for various sectors in FY25. Fort Worth’s aviation will see an investment of $24.2 million aimed at critical upkeep of airports, including Fort Worth Alliance-Perot Field, Meacham, and Spinks. Public events venues like the Fort Worth Convention Center and others anticipate funding of $71.3 million for maintenance, while the General Plan designates $157.7 million for an assortment of needs, from emergency services to neighborhood improvements. Additionally, Environmental Services are set to receive $1 million for solid waste and environmental quality maintenance, with Stormwater getting $23.4 million for drainage system upkeep. The water department itself will absorb an ample $536.4 million for water distribution and wastewater operations.
Before the budget becomes set in stone, the City Council weighs in on September 17, following budget workshops and a public hearing. Should the budget pass muster, Fort Worth kicks off its new fiscal year starting October 1.
