Fort Worth's local business landscape just got a notable boost thanks to Main Street America and American Express. Three neighborhood gems – Black Coffee, Green Thistle Emporium, and Acre Distilling – have been given a financial leg-up in the form of $10,000 grants intended to support their growth and community impact.

This windfall is part of a larger initiative by Main Street America's Backing Small Businesses grant program, which has earmarked funds for 500 small businesses across the nation each year. Texas alone boasts 17 winners, with Fort Worth taking home the lion's share this year. However, these businesses are not just aiming for short-term gains, later this year, they’ll get a shot at an additional $30,000 enhancement grant – a significant opportunity for just 25 small businesses to drive transformative changes within their business, and by extension, their neighborhood, the City of Fort Worth reported.

The economic ripples of this program aren't lost on the City of Fort Worth which sees it as a means to build capacity and encourage investment in under-loved commercial areas. Last year, two local businesses, Bodega South Main and Casa Azul, were also recipients of the grant, anchoring Fort Worth’s growing reputation as a fertile ground for small business success within revitalization corridors. A critical part of this community-centric growth is fortified by place-based organizations collaborating on bespoke community transformation strategies, greatly augmented by Main Street's structured four-point approach.

"Revitalization efforts are all about momentum – project by project, business by business, block by block," Robert Sturns, the city's director of economic development said, as per the City of Fort Worth. "These Main Street grants are incredibly important to that effort, because they funnel additional resources into these business corridors. After all, it’s the businesses who are helping build and largely setting the tone for their neighborhoods – creating spaces where people can hang out, interact, and develop a sense of community from the ground up."

As for the wider implications, Main Street America teamed up with American Express to propel this initiative forward in 2021. Since then, over $9 million has been funneled into the hands of 1,180 small business owners nationwide. The grants have served as a lifeline during the most testing times in recent history, namely the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the investment in projects that not only promote business growth but weave into the fabric of community building. Entrepreneurs in Fort Worth with an eye on the future and the community's heart can look forward to applying for the next round of this impactful grant.
