In Franklin, Massachusetts, a troubling pattern of mail theft directly from the blue postal service mailboxes has left the local community on high alert. Multiple checks have been stolen after a postal employee was forcefully relieved of their key to the collection boxes, according to reports by NBC Boston. This brazen act has resulted in a spike of incidents where thieves, using the stolen keys, access the boxes to pilfer checks which they then alter and fraudulently deposit, bleeding victims of thousands of dollars.
With neither a remedy for the deficit inflicted nor a suspect identified, the Franklin Police, alongside postal inspectors, are rigorously investigating the pervasive check "washing" operation, as detailed by CBS News. In a disturbing trend that has intensified since the pandemic, check fraud has rocketed by 385% per the U.S. Department of Treasury. The Postal Inspection Service has endeavored to bolster the security of mail drop boxes in response to the escalation, under an initiative named Project Safe Delivery launched back in 2023.
Franklin residents, unnerved by the audacity of the thefts, have been compelled to rethink their mailing choices. “It makes you definitely reconsider what your sending through the mail," one resident confessed, indicating the heightened wariness in the community. Echoing the sentiment, Franklin local Helen Mullen conveyed to CBS News, "People are just desperate for money, and they'll go to any extreme to use whatever they need to do to get it. So, it's really sad."
To stay safe, officials recommend taking mail directly to the post office, regularly checking mailboxes and bank statements for fraud, and reporting suspicious activity near postal facilities to the Franklin Police Department at 508-528-1212 or 911 for emergencies. These precautions are essential for protecting your mail.
