Garland, Texas police have ramped up their efforts against speedsters on the road, issuing a significant number of tickets during a recent enforcement campaign dubbed "Operation Slowdown." In collaboration with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the initiative took place from July 19 to August 4, focusing on areas notorious for vehicles exceeding speed limits.

Part of a broader endeavor to curb roadway accidents and fatalities, which saw speeds as a contributing factor in around a quarter of all deadly crashes in Texas last year. Garland officers were active for 55 hours, making 179 traffic stops. In the process, they distributed 197 citations, of which 106 were for speeding and the remainder spanned a variety of infractions from running red lights to driving without a license or insurance, additionally, they handed out 76 warnings, with 37 warnings specifically addressing speeding violations not to mention the regular patrols added 454 more speeding citations to the tally, according to the Garland Police Department.

Authorities have not minced words about the dangers of speeding — with TxDOT highlighting the grim statistic that over 1,200 deaths in 2023 were attributable to drivers who pushed beyond the speed limit. In reaction to this, the "Operation Slowdown" is seen as a strict but necessary measure to ensure road safety and reduce the likelihood of such fatalities in the future.
