The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently examining the details of a police shooting that occurred in DeKalb County. According to reports, Israel Johnson, a 23-year-old Atlanta resident, was shot by officers and is now recovering in stable condition. The incident did not result in any injuries to law enforcement personnel.

DeKalb County Police Department officers responded to a call on the morning of August 11, 2024, after being informed that Johnson had been threatening self-harm, equipped with a shotgun. Upon their arrival at the 800 block of Southland Point in Stone Mountain, officers found Johnson threatening his own life with the mentioned weapon. Despite their attempts to engage from a safe distance using their patrol cars as a barrier, Johnson advanced towards them and subsequently pointed the shotgun in their direction. This action caused two officers to discharge their firearms, injuring Johnson.

Following the shooting, officers on the scene provided immediate medical assistance to Johnson until emergency services arrived. He was then transported to Grady Hospital, where his condition has been listed as stable, according to an official release from the GBI.

The GBI will carry out an independent investigation into the shooting incident. This investigation will result in a case file, which will be passed to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office for a thorough review. The DA's office will then decide the course of further actions, based on the investigation's findings.
