In a recent development in Sumter County, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been called upon to assess an officer-involved shooting incident that left one man dead. The formal request for the independent inquiry came from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, which was handling the situation when the shooting occurred.

The series of events unfolded as 911 services received a distressed call about a man with a firearm, barricaded within a residence; shots had been fired and family members were reported to be inside at the time, this initial distress call laid the groundwork for what would escalate into a fatal encounter. The man, later identified as 45-year-old Jamie Lynn Still from Americus, GA, remained inside the property, located at the 1100 block of South Georgia Tech Parkway, despite deputies' efforts to negotiate his surrender. Still retaliated by pointing his rifle at law enforcement, leading to a deputy discharging their weapon, which struck and fatally wounded him.

According to GBI's press release, after the shooting, deputies entered and secured the residence, confirming that no one inside the home sustained injuries during the incident. Still received immediate attention on the scene as deputies attempted life-saving measures, however, he was ultimately pronounced dead.

The aftermath of such incidents triggers a procedural cascade wherein Still's body will be transferred to the GBI Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, to unearth more about the circumstances that led to his death, while GBI's independent investigation is underway and once it’s wrapped up, the finding will be placed on the desk of the Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office which will review the case file. The Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office will ultimately determine the next legal steps once the investigation is completed.
