Two men from Georgia have been handed federal prison sentences following their involvement in a gun trafficking operation that funneled firearms to various crime scenes across the United States and into Canada. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that Alvin Demar, 47, and Joshua Carter, 29, engaged in a scheme where Demar paid Carter and others to falsely purchase handguns in the Atlanta metropolitan area, which he then sold to third parties.
The consequences of their actions were far-reaching, with recovered guns linked to criminal activity in cities such as Atlanta; Baltimore, Maryland; and even as far north as Edmonton and Toronto, Canada. A Glock pistol, for instance, became evidence in three different shootings in Atlanta alone, further illuminating the grim echo of gun trafficking. In a case highlighted by WDEF, one of the firearms Carter purchased was used by convicted felon Jamal Plunkett to unleash a barrage of 17 rounds in Gainesville, Georgia.
Demar, who has a history of convictions, including drug trafficking and aggravated robbery, was prohibited from possessing firearms. Despite this, he was found with several illegal handguns and even a loaded USAS-12 semiautomatic shotgun, which is classified as a destructive device requiring special registration. He pleaded guilty to a range of firearm-related offenses in March and has been sentenced to 15 years in a federal prison as a result. Carter received a sentence of three years in federal prison for his role in the operation.
"Firearm traffickers present an acute and dangerous threat to communities within and outside our district," U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan asserted, recognizing the critical importance of addressing and curtailing the flow of illicit firearms. This sentiment was echoed in the measures taken against these men, who are now facing the consequences of their actions in contributing to this cycle of violence, Buchanan told WDEF.
