The Georgia Senate will be focusing on firearm storage safety. The newly established Senate Study Committee on Safe Firearm Storage will have its inaugural meeting next week to begin the exploration of legislative solutions concerning how guns are kept in homes and public spaces.
Chaired by Sen. Emanuel Jones (D–Decatur), the meeting scheduled for August 20 will be hosted in the State Capitol building in Atlanta. The bipartisan committee including, Sen. Frank Ginn (R–Danielsville), Sen. Marty Harbin (R–Tyrone), Sen. David Lucas (D–Macon), and Sen. Ben Watson (R–Savannah), will come together at 11:00 a.m. and it's open to public participation. Senate Press reports that the event will also be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person.
The committee's mandate is to take an in-depth look into the "conditions, needs, issues and problems related to safe firearm storage." The aim of this study is to potentially inform future legislation that could shape how firearm storage is regulated in the state of Georgia. As the national debate on gun safety continues, local governments are investigating various approaches to mitigate risks associated with improper gun storage which can lead to accidental discharges and unauthorized access.
The interest in this topic is not just a policy but also for the community and personal safety. Details about the committee's findings and future meetings will be closely followed by interested parties on both sides of the gun control debate.
