In a surprising turn of events this past weekend, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team managed to secure a nail-biting victory against the Florida State Seminoles with a final score of 24-21. The win, which occurred at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, has ended Georgia Tech's 15-game losing streak against top-ten opponents and marks a significant moment for the team, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, took to social media platform X to celebrate the win, posting "GA Schools 2 — FSU 0...Jackets win!" according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Dream is set to take on the Indiana Fever later this evening at State Farm Arena, hoping to rebound from their last encounter where they faced defeat. The game will be the second to be relocated from the Dream's usual venue in College Park, a shift likely to stir additional fan excitement.
The game-winning moment for Georgia Tech was delivered by kicker Aidan Birr with a 44-yard field goal that sailed through as the clock ticked down its final five seconds, as stated in an article by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Birr's successful kick came after an earlier miss from 51 yards and capped off a drive in which the Yellow Jackets pulled together for the win.
"After I missed the first one, I come back to the sideline and (Tech director of player development Anthony Parker) was like, ‘I’m glad you missed this one, you got it out of the way, you’re gonna have to hit a game-winner.’ This is like in the third quarter,” Birr told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He added that during the decisive moment, "Just running on there I was just like I’m gonna lean on God and trust the process."
The Yellow Jackets' performance was also bolstered by their running game. With Jamal Haynes rushing for 75 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Haynes King throwing for 146 yards while rushing another 54, the team averaged 5.3 yards per carry. Despite a rocky start, where Florida State initially led the game after Lawrance Toafili’s 28-yard run, Georgia Tech rose to the occasion, demonstrating resilience and teamwork.
Moreover, Georgia Tech's win also highlighted some impressive statistics; it was the Jackets’ 16th victory over Florida State and their second win in Dublin. The Jackets' performance under Coach Brent Key proved triumphant as they are now 5-0 against ACC ranked teams with him leading the helm. Attendance figures for the game were announced at 47,000, signifying a strong turnout for an international showcase of college football. As they prepare for their next game against Georgia State, the Yellow Jackets hope to continue their newfound momentum.
