Residents and businesses in Germantown experienced a sudden water shut-off yesterday when an excavator contractor damaged a water main near Wolf River Boulevard and Germantown Road. The incident briefly halted water service within a segment of Germantown Road amidst ongoing construction activities. According to Action News 5, the water was promptly restored to customers following the mishap.
Representatives from the city confirmed to FOX13 Memphis that crews worked diligently to repair the ruptured line caused by the excavator's contact. The water, which had been gushing for several hours, was contained primarily in a trench dug by workers. Broderick McNeal, a driver caught in the construction zone, pragmatically noted, "Memphis, they try to make things better. Germantown, they try to make things better. Things like that happen sometimes". Another resident expressed preparedness, saying, "There’s plenty of water in our storage", indicative of a community accustomed to and resilient in the face of infrastructural breakdowns.
An official update relayed that the break occurred shortly after 3 p.m. Still, the city did not disclose the scope of the impact, leaving unanswered how many homes or businesses had their water services disrupted. A utility worker mentioned to ABC24 the swift occurrence of the break, which necessitated the complete shutdown of water services to mend the damage.
The water outage had tangible ramifications for residents like Riley Hall, who stayed at the Marriott Courtyard hotel. Finding no water to brush his teeth, Hall realized he had been without water for hours and decided to relocate to a different hotel. "They didn't know how long it was gonna be, but that we were able to check out if we needed to with no charge, and that they understood," Riley told ABC24. Ultimately, the city informed that water services were restored to all customers just before 9 p.m. on the same day, alleviating the immediate inconvenience posed by the day’s disruptions.
