On a rather standard day for Texas governance, Governor Greg Abbott has placed his strategic imprint on the Texas Medical Board with the appointment of eight members, renewing several terms and introducing new faces alike. With these appointments, the Governor is signaling his intent to bolster the board that stands as the gatekeeper for medical practice regulations within the Lone Star State. According to the official press release, these appointees come from varied backgrounds – mixing medical expertise with business acumen and public service.
The appointed members who will now help navigate the future of Texas healthcare are a mixture of doctors, entrepreneurs, and education advocates. Leading the appointments is Luisa del Rosal, a political science scholar and dedicated advisor at the Southern Methodist University, assuming a term that concludes in 2025. Following her, appointed for a term to expire in 2027, is Garry Crain, lauded for his contributions to healthcare administration. Serving until 2029, along with several others, is Linda Troncoso of El Paso, who brings her expertise from civil and environmental engineering spheres. Zach Jones, M.D., a board-certified anesthesiologist carrying both a clinical background and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from The University of Texas, also joins the board.
Reappointed member Sharon Barnes, a biochemistry graduate and experienced human resources professional, steps into this new term amidst her extensive community involvement – from Habitat for Humanity to the Boys & Girls Club. Likewise, Dr. George De Loach returns to continue imparting his orthopedic expertise and maintaining his academic ties with Sam Houston State University. With a blend of public health and private practice know-how, Dr. Manuel Quinones, Jr., is also reappointed, standing as a representative figure in the San Antonio medical community. Completing the appointments is Dr. David Vanderweide, who, as an orthopedic surgeon, holds affiliations with multiple professional associations and upholds his faith leadership role at Clear Creek Community Church.
