Oregon's students have a new advocate in their corner, and her name is Governor Tina Kotek. In a push to expand and improve educational opportunities, Gov. Kotek held a Summer and After School Learning Summit with the backing of the Oregon Community Foundation and the Gray Family Foundation. Addressing the gathering, Kotek underscored the importance of such programs, “The research is clear. Summer and afterschool programs reduce learning loss, accelerate academic success, and strengthen student wellbeing,” she said in a statement cited by the Governor's office.

The initiative seeks not only to bridge the educational divide but also to implement a sustainable model for the future. The summit drew a variety of stakeholders, including local officials, representatives from school districts, and members of sovereign tribal nations, all with the common aim of bolstering Oregon's educational framework, according to the Governor's office. Discussed were strategies for the creation of successful programs, integrating youth voices into the planning process, as well as addressing the needs of students with disabilities and those from historically underserved communities.

Backing this initiative, Gov. Kotek has played a pivotal role in securing $30 million in state funding for the summer of 2024 through House Bill 4082. The legislature, introduced by Representative Susan McLain, aims at laying the groundwork for high-quality summer learning experiences. "This summit is one example of how we are stronger when we work together toward a common goal,” remarked Belle Cantor, Senior Education Program Officer at Oregon Community Foundation, as per the summit reports.

Moreover, the Governor has proposed a robust plan to boost the current service level for the State School Fund by approximately $515 million for the 2025-27 biennium, based on a revised calculation approach. This overhaul is a vital facet of the education funding and student success conversations that the Governor's Office is steering in preparation for the next legislative session.
