Today marked the beginning of construction for the North County Wellness Center, a new South San Francisco facility poised to deliver an expansive array of health and social services to local residents, said San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine. The $132.5 million project near public transit options at 1024 Mission Road promises a comprehensive hub for Medi-Cal recipients or those eligible, providing access to health care, dental services, and broader social service assistance. The initiative, described by the County of San Mateo, will feature a health clinic, a dental suite, and other essential resources under one roof.
Supervisor Pine detailed the convenience the center brings, "This center brings essential services closer to the residents who rely on the County and our partners for health care, dental care and more," as per the County of San Mateo. Wide hallways, private spaces for eligibility checks, and applications for assistance programs such as CalFresh and low-cost child care will welcome visitors, expected to be completed in 2026. The building's design aims for an environmentally friendly approach, with cross-laminated timber construction, electric vehicle chargers, and solar energy stations, among other sustainable features. It is on track for LEED Gold Certification, signaling a commitment to eco-conscious construction.
According to the County of San Mateo, the groundbreaking ceremony was led by County Executive Mike Callagy. It highlights the central vision for the center - serving as a one-stop shop for public services. "We want to create an environment where people are happy or feel uplifted to be here," Board of Supervisors Vice President David Canepa told the County of San Mateo. The Wellness Center is a testament to the delivery of integrated care and will house specialty exam rooms, behavioral health services, and physical therapy services, with satellite offices for the District Attorney and Treasurer/Tax Collector included.

Funded by the County’s General Fund and Measure K, the half-cent sales tax is directed at local needs. The project is managed by XL Construction and designed by SmithGroup. Incorporating a six-chair dental clinic featuring digital imagery and the anticipated range of accessible community resources exemplifies the center's mission to offer residents a centralized suite of vital services. By optimizing resident care through spatial and material choice, the facility aims to streamline and destigmatize the experience of seeking public assistance, the Board of Supervisors Vice President Canepa added.
