Bernard Matthews, 45, has been found guilty of murdering 22-year-old Diamonte Green. Matthews was convicted of first-degree murder while armed, for shooting Green eight times in February 2021. The verdict was announced on August 12 by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and MPD Chief Pamela Smith, following a difficult trial for witnesses and Green’s family.
Matthews, convicted of first-degree murder, also faces charges of firearm possession during a crime of violence, unlawful firearm possession, and carrying a pistol without a license. His sentencing is set for November 8, with a minimum of 30 years in prison. The shooting, which resulted in Diamonte Green’s death, was prompted by a dispute involving Matthews' son on Instagram and occurred in an apartment building hallway.
The investigation, spearheaded by the Metropolitan Police Department with the assistance of the U.S. Attorney's Office, highlights a narrative all too familiar, social media altercations spilling into real-world violence with an irreversible outcome. The evidence presented by the government revealed a disturbing scene, a midday pursuit that ended with eight gunshots fired at 33rd and C Street SE, D.C.
As the community absorbs the verdict, concerns about social media and illegal firearms continue. This case illustrates how a digital dispute led to a deadly shooting. The verdict ends this case but highlights ongoing issues with violence. Bernard Matthews now faces significant legal consequences.
