A remarkable display of perseverance from Gwinnett County police officers culminated in the rescue of a 77-year-old Snellville man, who was found submerged in a creek near Buford earlier this week, following a detailed search operation led by the Gwinnett County Police Department.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the saga began on Aug. 20 when family members, concerned for the man potentially grappling with a mental health issue, reported him and his vehicle missing; officers then enlisted the aid of traffic cameras pinpointing the man’s Chrysler Pacifica on I-85 Northbound near Buford, however an initial sweep of the area did not produce a sighting of the man, triggering the officers to escalate the situation to a Mattie’s Call—a critical alert for missing disabled or elderly individuals.
The critical turnaround emerged the following day when Sgt. Brett Shirley led the renewed effort, and, upon shouting into the wilderness, heard a voice in return, leading him alongside Lt. John Cleland and Cpl. Andrew Palmer to discover the man lying in a creek, as reported by Gwinnett Daily Post. The officers expedited the extraction of the man from the cold water, calling in Gwinnett County Fire Department medics who transported him to a local hospital for further treatment.
Body camera footage revealed through the Gwinnett Daily Post showed the man, clad only in a T-shirt, shorts, and socks, shivering and attempting to speak as officers lifted him to the creek's bank; his car, with personal belongings still inside, suggested he may have hit a guard rail and set out on foot before his unfortunate fall into the creek— where he remained for what was believed to be 12 hours.
Heartfelt gratitude was exchanged at the scene, with the man reportedly telling his rescuers, “God bless you,” and inquiring about a blanket, to which Cleland assured him, “Yep, we’re going to bring blankets, get you warmed up and get you to the hospital," and comforted him with the prospect of warmth and returning home, the officers' noble actions eclipsing what could have been an ill-fated event into a narrative of survival and renewed hope for the man and his family, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
