Henry County can expect to see enhanced safety measures at a key intersection after the Illinois Commerce Commission signed off on a stipulated agreement that will usher in automatic warning devices at the County Road 2450 East highway-rail grade crossing, located on the tracks of the BNSF Rail Company near Kewanee.
The decision, aimed to actively reduce the risk of collisions and boost public safety around train tracks, will see the state shouldering a significant portion of the costs. "Upgrading warning devices at highway-rail crossings prevents collisions and saves lives," ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan said, as stated by the State of Illinois. This endeavor is largely financed by the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF), which is expected to cover up to 95 percent of the anticipated $397,780 bill - specifically, not to exceed $377,889.
Completion of the work is slated for no later than 18 months following the Order date, highlighting a commitment to expeditiously deliver on safety improvements. The GCPF, a key pillar in Illinois's efforts to maintain and enhance its rail crossing safety since its creation in 1955, accrues its funds from a designated portion of motor fuel tax revenue. According to the State of Illinois, the state's General Assembly commits $42 million annually to the program, ensuring resources are in place to consistently follow through on such critical safety projects.
