In Highlands Ranch, a road once known simply as Lucent Boulevard is set to carry on a legacy of heroism, having been renamed Kendrick Castillo Way in honor of the young man who sacrificed his life for his classmates. Douglas County officials approved the change at a public hearing on August 27, ensuring that every traveler along the stretch from County Line Road to South Broadway will recall the nobility of Kendrick Castillo's actions on that fateful day, May 7, 2019, as per Douglas County.
The decision to rename the boulevard comes as part of a broader initiative led by the Kendrick Castillo Memorial Oversight Committee, formed in 2022, which included Kendrick's family and friends, local government representatives, and community organizations, together, they have undertaken several projects to commemorate his life including a robotics lab, a park memorial, and a scholarship fund. "We're very honored that it has come to light to rename Lucent Boulevard, a street I drive every day," it's a move that not only honors Kendrick’s memory but also emphasizes the importance of resources for mental health and adequately funding our police forces, John Castillo, Kendrick's father said, as obtained by Douglas County.
The rechristening of Lucent Boulevard is a testament to the enduring impact a single act of bravery can have on a community, Kinndrick Castillo's name is now permanently etched onto the map of a town grappling with tragedy and looking towards healing and preventative measures.
