Hillsborough County is dedicating the entire month of August to celebrate and raise awareness about water quality. With a vast distribution system delivering over 78 million gallons of drinking water daily to nearly 716,000 people, the county's Water Resources team emphasizes the necessity of both providing and maintaining high-quality tap water, a sentiment echoed by the annual Water Quality Reports available for residents who are curious about the water they consume every day.
According to Hillsborough County's announcement, in 2023, they collected about 7,739 water samples and performed 33,200 tests, highlighting their commitment to water safety and public health. National Water Quality Month, established in 2005, supports these efforts by promoting discussions on water conservation and strategies for ensuring safe drinking water for the future.
Water is constantly under threat from various pollutants that range from industrial contaminants to common household waste. Hillsborough County aims to heighten individual responsibility by suggesting practical home solutions to protect our shared water sources. Simple actions such as using professional car washes, cleaning up after pets, sweeping driveways instead of hosing them down, utilizing organic lawn care products, and properly disposing of hazardous materials like leftover paint and unwanted medications can significantly mitigate the risk of water contamination. These small tasks, though not always obvious, are crucial to the health of water ecosystems.
