This Labor Day weekend presents a great opportunity for those looking to adopt a pet. The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center is hosting the 'Labor of Love' event this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., during which all adoption fees will be waived. Adopters will receive a goodie bag with pet care essentials, including a leash and treats, as well as coupons to help offset the costs of pet ownership, according to the news release from the Hillsborough County.
With shelters bearing the weight of unprecedented numbers of animals, adoption events like these are more than just a cute opportunity for pictures with puppies and kittens. The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center itself is operating beyond its means, at over 140 percent capacity for dogs and a staggering 400 percent for cats. A dog or cat from this shelter may have been there for an extended period, and with kitten season in full swing, their situation is becoming increasingly urgent.
Those not able to make a full-time commitment to a pet can still lend a hand — or a temporary home — by joining the shelter’s robust foster program. Fostering offers a reprieve for animals and shelters alike by providing the former with a caring environment and the latter with much needed space.
The Pet Resource Center prides itself on being the only open-admissions shelter in Hillsborough County, offering refuge to every cat and dog, regardless of their breed, size or health woes. Open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
