A violent episode that began with a home invasion in Brookhaven late Thursday night escalated into a police chase, culminating in an officer-involved shooting in Chamblee. According to Atlanta News First, four armed individuals infiltrated a residence on Caldwell Road. The homeowner, monitoring her home surveillance, witnessed the intrusion and alerted a friend who confronted the intruders, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The suspects fled the scene in a Lexus, setting off a pursuit with police officers in tow. During the escape, a nearby neighbor, Andrew Fisher, caught a glimpse of the chaos. "It sounds like gunshots, so we looked outside, and we saw a car drive off," Fisher told FOX5 Atlanta. The chase concluded when the Lexus crashed near Peachtree Boulevard and Broad Street in Chamblee, with the occupants then attempting to flee on foot.
Officials reported that the driver, 19-year-old Albert Eugene Burns from Snellville, was armed when confronted by police. Burns was subsequently shot by an officer after dropping a gun and continuing to run, only to be shot again as he attempted to retrieve a second dropped gun. Following the incident, Burns was hospitalized and taken into custody. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed to Atlanta News First that multiple guns were found at the scene, and Brookhaven Police Department is investigating the home invasion and aggravated assault. In addition to Burns, Dunwoody and Chamblee police have apprehended 22-year-old Davion Harper and 18-year-old Tyson Kamari Kirksey, both of Conyers. A fourth suspect remains at large.
Rapper Tracy T, who was the homeowner's friend involved in the initial shootout, expressed the surprise and concern that rippled through the community. "I was on the phone and heard a ‘crack, crack, crack.’ I was immediately like, ‘what's going on?" a neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, recalled the incident to FOX5 Atlanta.
As details continue to emerge, the GBI is conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Meanwhile, Brookhaven police are pressing forward with their inquiries into the home invasion.
