Honolulu is bracing for a blend of weather patterns over the next few days, including the possibility of windy and wet conditions as a system southeast of the islands shows potential for development. According to Honolulu Weather Forecast, there currently stands a trough of low pressure some 750 miles north-northwest of Honolulu and a high-pressure area approximately 1500 miles north of the islands that has been steering the existing moderate to locally breezy trade winds.
The trade winds are expected to maintain their force in the next couple of days, with an uptick projected mid-week as the trough dissolves allowing the high pressure to the north to strengthen the winds. The National Weather Service in Honolulu advises that the eventual path and development of what is today known as Invest 90E could significantly influence weather conditions over the weekend. Showers are anticipated to favor windward and mauka regions, with more showery weather anticipated to move in as the week progresses.
Travel conditions may be affected as the aviation weather services have issued an AIRMET Sierra for temporary mountain obscuration along the northern and eastern sections of Oahu, Molokai, and Maui, set to decrease in coverage as the day continues. For mariners, the forecast anticipates fresh to strong east trade winds through tomorrow, with the advisory potentially expanding come Wednesday due to building high pressure to the north.
Noteworthy swell shifts might be the talk for surf enthusiasts, with a fresh long-period south-southwest swell contributing to rising surf along south-facing shores. "Surf along south facing shores will continue to climb through the day," the NWS noted, as they also watch for increased surf from a west-northwest swell expected midweek, contributed by the remnants of former Typhoon Ampil. Meanwhile, surf conditions along east-facing shores are predicted to stay small through tomorrow before trending upward while the tidal observations indicate the possibility for minor tidal flooding this afternoon.
The Small Craft Advisory remains in effect in various water channels around Maui County and the Big Island until 6 PM HST tomorrow.
